When you think of vegan food its hard not to think about wholesome goodness, clean greens and well being. Which is why we love a bit of rebellion. Ovolo never does things by the book and its new offering by Alibi, (its plant based restaurant) is shaking things up in Sydney a little bit more.
Whilst we might like to press Control Alt Delete on COVID19, the new menu at ALibi is all about ALT CTRL EAT, we are very happy to say that EAT CONTROL is quite difficult with this menu, in fact its such a bit addictive in the way vegan food hasnt been before. The menu is split into naughty sections ‘Burgers & Dogs’, ‘Dirty Bits’ and ‘Make it your kinda Dirty’ with a final section ‘Something Clean’ (no hand sanitiser here folks).
We order two burgers. First up is PAT the Mushroom. Now, we have never named a burger, as it feels like murder to eat something you have given a personality to, but oh boy! A veggie pattie is sandwiched between giant slices of luscious creamy mushroom, with crunchy golden slightly charred battered onion rings all cushioned top toe with a brioche bun. The second burger is our fav. Southern Fried Chicken has a fresh slaw slathered with chipotle mayo and goey cheese. We made it ‘out kinda Dirty’ with the addition of vegan bacon. Its the kind of burger we feel we should be munching on whilst watching Grease in a drive in cinema. Its both nostalgic and a bit wicked.
We could have ordered ‘Dirty Bits’ like Mac n’ Cheese but decided to be good (booo!). Next up is the Kelp Noodles. Its texture is gloriously reminicent of potato noodles. It’s dotted prettily with dried olives, Cacio E Pepe then tossed with snow peas accompanied with a pot of pea puree. The Spicy Udon looks ands tastes more like soba noodles, it’s got oddles of creamy hoisin and miso sauce and topped with savoury crumbs of tempeh.
This is not vegan food as we know it. Its dude food we love. So forget CTRL, get onto your keyboard (or call the Ovolo folks) and go bad, go dirty and reset your expecations – there are no good girls/boys in wanted here.
