If you were an artist, what would be the ultimate honour? An exhibition where everything sold out in a matter of minutes? Well, for John Olsen it’s a hotel named after him featuring his work. The Art Series Hotels ($500 million project) is the brainchild of Will Deague who picks a different artist to act as the inspiration behind each hotel’s creation.
The Cullen opened last year with a welcome reception from both critics and customers and now the five star, luxury boutique hotel, The Olsen has launched with 229 hotel rooms and suites. Offering a completely interactive experience, you can choose between the Blue Bottle Restaurant, Steer Bar & Grill and Norbu day spa, or you can actually venture outside The Olsen and hit the shops down Chapel Street.
There are 492 Olsen prints used throughout the hotel with a 6 meter mural “The Yellow Sun and Yarra”, which was created specifically for the glass enclosed entrance. Quirky accents used in The Cullen have been adopted for The Olsen including paint drip door handles, art books and frosted glass images.
For rooms, choose between “The Olsen” (a more masculine style named after John) or “The Katherine” (a more feminine room named after John’s wife) or if you’re feeling decadent, you might want to book The Olsen Penthouse Suite.
