When did your last cocktail come served in a hip flask? The novelty factor is off the charts when it comes to the Old Fashioned at Wild Sage. The bar tenders have had a fair bit of fun with this classic drink, putting it very much back in fashion. Your hip flask arrives in its own wooden box, alongside a very well dressed glass, garnished with caramelised orange slices and cut ice. The idea is you poor the drink out into the glass at your leisure, but hey if you want to give the hip flask a go, no one will stop you. Now, sometimes a novelty cocktail can be a flash in the pan, but this baby hits the spot.
We could sit here and chat all day about cocktails, but that would do a serious disservice to the food. Wild Sage is actually the sister café to Wild Sage Cammeray, the team clearly have worked out the right formula for dishes that don’t sacrifice on flavour but still feel pretty clean. Okay, okay, the breakfast French toast might not be guilt free, but at dinner get stuck in to bright beetroot hummus and flat bread, and a clever cauliflower medley that’s a fair few colours of the rainbow. You’ll feel completely virtuous with these small plates, before moving on to specials like gluten free sweet potato gnocchi and a slow cooked beef rib that literally falls off the bone.
Perched on the back side of Barangaroo, right near the escalators down from Wynyard, Wild Sage’s outside tables are perfect for a spot of al fresco dining with a serve of people watching. The best part is you’re away from the big crowds of peak hour, but still part of the action. Start your day with breakfast bowls and that decadent French toast or settle in for the evening with a blanket under the stars.
