The Kinks wrote “I am a lover, not a fighter”. The strange thing about this new seafood restaurant is that it turns you into both. It’s hard not to fall in love with their dishes, (yes, yes…we were brought up to share) but making sure you secure that last piece of snapper ceviche pickled with cucumber and jalapeno…I am sorry, it’s a fight by fork, speed and ingenuity!
Love.Fish duo from Rozelle, Michelle GrandMilkovic and Executive Chef, Michael Milkovic are known as a small ‘fish bar with a green heart’.
Situated at the pointy end of the Barangaroo strip; inside/outside dining comes with thoughtful touches like heaters and rugs. They have attracted one of the best restaurant managers in the business from Café Sydney. David Grace knows how to make you feel special with the kind of hospitality lost generations ago. A collaboration with Castagna in northeast Victoria, one of Australia’s premier bio-dynamic winemakers has created house wines such as pinot blanc viognier which set the tone. This is no ordinary place to eat, nor are the cocktails. It’s got more ‘Sole’ than Memphis.
Raw is the place to start; Tasmanian Ocean trout tartare with a snappy yuzu dressing and cured Hiramasa yellowtail kingfish gravlax start things nicely. You can’t go past Hawkesbury loligo squid dusted with peppery chorizo powder or a cone of crispy, crunchy pop in your mouth Clarence River school prawns. But let’s get more grown up. The ‘Sea’ section is a delight of fillets from A-Z. Red Spot Whiting to whole fish of the day, a stunning dusky flathead, normally reserved for premium fish n’ chips, here it’s regally cooked whole, fileted at the table, then doused in miso butter with winter greens. Whilst Porteno has dominated the best brussel sprouts in Sydney, the crown has gone, this is it – brussels are flash fried, with black bean and caramalised carrot. It’s hard not to say “you had me at hello”.
Love. Fish may have moved to big time Barangaroo but the ethos of love for our planet, sustainable restaurant practices, Australian seafood, wines and produce creates an intimate and accessible place to share (even if it’s so good, you just really don’t want to).
