Food of the Gods, Zeus Street Greek Opens in Rosebery

Zeus Greek If the Greek Gods had an equivalent of Hue Heffner, it was mostly likely Zeus. Not only were the weather patterns under his charms, so were the ladies, hence ultimately being a bit of a family man!

Perhaps it’s not so surprising that Zeus Street Greek is a restaurant that celebrates love and good food, shared between family, friends and the generations.  The founders are two chefs from seemingly contrasting culinary backgrounds; Costa Anastasiadis (Crust Gourmet Pizza) and George Kyrprianou (Pony Dining) who have collaborated to bring their family heritage of old world Greek food to life in a creative new eco dining experience. Having conquered Drummoyne and the surrounding suburbs, their latest conquest is Rosebery.

Inside the exposed industrial ceilings and a wall of Greek small goods make any wait for ordering entertaining, plus they have thoughtfully provided padded banquets to rest for those who choose to order and run.

The star attraction is the volcanic rock rotisserie. What a beauty! As chefs madly dash to keep up with demand, skewered meats are lovingly basted with butter and Zeus herb blend which no amount of pleading will reveal its secrets. Yes we tried…

ZEUS_2016_PITA_620x620pxWhilst the menu is full of crowd pleasers, the meats are both conversation showstoppers and a source of arguments (“Darling I love you but there is no way I am sharing that last bit!”). The staple is their iconic gyro; a soft house-made flatbread rolled and stuffed to create the ultimate luscious meat sandwich. The ‘Hermes’ is our pick; super succulent rotisserie chicken, chilli tzatziki, zingy Aegean slaw and golden pepper salsa.  Order up a storm from the new menu with beetroot flavoured hummus, crispy feta filo fingers, Yia Yia chips with oregano feta and a refreshing Saganaki salad with moreish Kefalograviera wafers and a tahini dressing.

Delectable Greek doughnuts served with Mexta, a Greek brandy and a salty toffee praline is enough to silence any noisy subjects. It’s a win for the inner west and it has to be said, the Gods are smiling at them and with good reason.

About the author

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
