Imagine if Andy Warhol was alive, and he opened a bar in Sydney. Well he’s not. And he didn’t. But we found something pretty close.
Work in Progress Bar – or WIP BAR – is a pop art lover’s haven. And while it may be located on King Street in the city, it’s attracting more than the black suit and closed-toe shoe crowd.
Spilling with Sydney’s fedora wearing cool cats, muscle your way to the bar and order a Pomelo Fizz to get the taste buds jumping; Avion Blanco tequila and Aperol with fresh grapefruit lemon and soda. As far as food goes, it’s a Thai affair with small dishes like betel leaf, to larger dishes including crispy pork belly, pad thai and barramundi curry.
Courtesy of the Merivale crew and curated by ex-MCA art guru Glenn Barkley, the walls are laden with pop art and old pinball machines, and there’s even a game room to keep the ‘big kids’ entertained – did someone say Connect Four?
It may not be as cool as Andy, but it’s not too far off.
