Remember those times when you’d sit eagerly on the phone, waiting to see if Jacques Reymond had a table available? Whether you do or don’t remember this feeling, it will never happen again. After years of sitting at the top of the Melbourne restaurant food chain and after almost three decades running the loved restaurant, Jacques Reymond has hung up his chef whites. The restaurant by the same name is also no longer. What will happen?
Thomas Woods and Hayden McFarland who have worked under Reymond for years will be taking the philosophy and the expertise and opening Woodland House in its place. They’re bringing a love of produce, commitment to the season’s offerings, and a knack for innovation and creativity to the table.
Choosing a la carte (only available Tuesday through Thursday) will see dishes like the grilled John Dory, new potatoes with leek and celery and Portland sea urchin, or the mocha soufflé with light and dark chocolate pave.
Five and eight course tasting menus are a way to sample the true creativity and range of these chefs. They open with the likes of cucumber and tomato with charred eel and sweet aniseed, move to Flinders Island lamb served with cauliflower, nettle, saltbush and espelette and finish with cherries, malted sorbet and crisp milk.
We are truly saddened to see such an icon closing, but looking forward to seeing what these young chefs can do.
