Five of Melbourne’s Newest Cafes

Melbourne is often synonymous with good coffee. This tends to mean new cafes pop up faster than you can say cold drip. In the last few weeks there have been some noteworthy additions to the café scene so here are five of the newest, for your drinking – and eating – pleasure.

Touchwood

Touchwood Café – Richmond

A collaboration of café minds, this newbie is from the team behind Tall Timber and Station Street Trading Co. and the team behind Pillar of Salt and Barry. This huge light filled café boasts high ceilings, 5 Senses coffee, a killer courtyard and a menu that has something for everyone. Think Tequila cured smoked salmon with beetroot relish, crème fraiche and smashed peas or peanut butter and jelly whole meal waffles.

Barry

Barry – Northcote

From the team behind Pillar of Salt and more recently Touchwood, Barry is bringing more caffeinated goodness to the northside. On High Street in Westgarth, it’s nestled into a great corner building and offers floor to ceiling windows, light interior and some great communal bench seating for happy brunching. Coffee by 5 senses is served up next to anything from Thai coconut sago pudding, wagyu beef burgers and toasted topped with peanut butter, tomatoes and herbs. It works.

Short Round

Short Round – Thornbury

Another one for those living north of the city, Short Round is giving Thornbury a new local brunch spot to get out of bed for. Proud Mary coffee kicks things off while a potato, chorizo and manchego omelette will keep you going all day. Toasted cherry loaf with nutmeg cream, slivered almonds and kirsch syrup satisfies the sugar seekers.

Hannah

Hannah – St Kilda

Heading South Side, Hannah has that homely feel and spins vinyl to solidify the laid back atmosphere. Proud Mary coffee in on the machine while Mirko Richter – ex Fitzrovia and Royal Saxon – is on the pans. Snow pea, green bean and broccoli salad with Brussels sprouts, goat’s cheese, witlof, walnuts and mustard fruits pleases the health conscious while the coconut pancakes, pink peppered berries and vanilla mascarpone is a little more indulgent.

141 Chapel Street, St Kilda

Brother Thomas

Brother Thomas – CBD

Brother Thomas may sound familiar. They are the roastery that has been supplying CoffeeHead for a while. Now they have their own café where they can set up shop. Their display cabinet is better than most. Little Bertha makes the sweets and rotating sandwiches, salads and tarts make up the rest. You might even luck out with lasagna. And just across the road you’ll find yourself in Flagstaff gardens. Hello summer.
