Named after its owners’ overfed and subsequently overweight cocker spaniel, Fat Rupert’s is the newest addition to Bondi’s eat and drink scene.
Occupying the recently vacated Flying Squirrel corner spot on Bondi Road, you wouldn’t be mistaken for thinking it’s kinda the same (?!) pulling the same hipster crowd complete with beards, chequered shirts, and non-prescription glasses.
Look around and you’ll see hints of the new owner’s – Aaron Pearce – quirky flavour. Vintage bric-a-brac, eclectic trinkets and old nursery rhyme books are scattered around the place. Be sure to flick through “Sh*t my dog says” for a chuckle.
The food is seasonal and share style, courtesy of Head Chef Fiat, straight off the pans from Flying Squirrel. Crowd pleasers include a warm brussels sprout and quinoa salad, fried stuffed mussels smoked salmon and cream cheese, and an absolute knockout prawn saganaki with haloumi.
The wine list is solid, featuring a range of boutique beers and wines from up-and-coming wine makers, including a first drop Shiraz from “Mothers Milk” in the Barossa. There’s a punchy cocktail list too – try “The Grand Rhupy” with vodka, Grand Marnier and rhubarb chutney.
Don your high-tops, jump on your fixie and pay a visit to Fat Rupert – it’ll be totes amazeballs.
