You wouldn’t be mistaken for thinking Old Growler is the name of a XXX adult shop in the Cross, but you’d be wrong we’re afraid. It’s in fact a new underground bar on the cusp of Kings Cross courtesy of a couple of seasoned industry peeps (ex- Ching-a-lings and Runcible Spoon).
Dodge the squashed chewy on William Street and stop when you see a broken overhead light box and a small sign saying ‘Old Growler’.
Shimmy down the stairs and follow your ears to the beats of loud music and murmurs of happy tipsy people below. Once you’re in, take respite at one of the many high-rise booths, or if there are a few of you, take control of the large communal table and get settled in for the night.
As far as booze goes, opt for one of the many Young Henry’s craft beers including limited releases “The Kid Porter” or “Vertigo Anglo-Weizen”. If you like drinks shaken or stirred, flick to the cocktail page and try “G’s Love Letter” with Canadian club whisky infused with tropical summer hops, apricot liqueur, mint, orange, ginger and agave.
But it’s not all liquid fun here, the Old Growler punches out solid food options too. Wrap your laughing gear around goodies like pork and drunken prune terrine, peppered mackerel with poached egg, and a knockout gnocchi dish with grilled figs, hazelnuts and gorgonzola.
Get your Growl on at Sydney’s newest watering hole.
