Foley Lane

This hangout is sleek n’ smart with a weirdly NYC speak-easy fit out. Move over Spanish quarter, the ‘Spanish Corner’ is found a foot stomp away from Oxford Street.

Architectural schizophrenia aside, one thing that doesn’t have a dual personality is the food. Nelson Burgos (Mamasita) serves up bold, fresh flavours so true to the homeland that tapa means that – just uno, one. You’ll need a new way to test just how much someone loves you; there aren’t any gallant “Oh no I couldn’t, please…you have the last one” dilemmas in this joint.

Seating is at perch level, so an intimate knowledge of gazing up at your waiter’s nasal hairs will no longer be a concern…. Stand or sit, lean or lurch there is eye candy abound including the food. Kick off with a jug of Sangria spiced up with top shelf rum and house made caramelized orange syrup. Dive into roasted mushrooms with a zingy gremolata, layered piquillo and spanner crab croquette, morcilla with truffle oil and oozing poached egg causes more than one ‘Ole’. Longaniza may sound like a style of flamenco but it knocks chorizo off its sausage stage in a clap of the hands. Sliders get a makeover with a calamari and rocket sauce partnership which will have your hips sashaying before your lips have clamped down on a Rosita Ale or a Riley St Ruby cocktail.

Friendship duo Julian Marchetto and Nathan Moses have re-created a bit of Espana. You won’t find stuffed back bulls, wall hangings of wagon wheels and or an effigy of Santa Maria here. This is one place which doesn’t need the odd prayer to deliver a great night out.

About the author

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
