Down one of Melbourne’s quintessential hidden streets, you’d be forgiven if you missed Tobie Puttock’s new restaurant venture, The Kitchen Cat all together.
What used to be Jamie Oliver and Puttock’s joint project, Fifteen Melbourne, has reopened with a new name, new menu and thanks to architects Woods Bagot, a new fit-out.
The space is predominantly white concrete, with exposed pipes and lighting and cute plants hanging in glass bowls from the ceiling. It’s nothing fancy; just a simple design with one major feature: the exposed kitchen including an amazing rotisserie for all to admire. The private dining room (that fits 10) in true old-world-style is also a stand out.
Relaxed and unpretentious, the casual feel of The Kitchen Cat makes it perfect for a Friday night dinner with friends or a laid-back family meal. Surprisingly reasonably priced (melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi only $16), the food is authentic, unassuming and uncomplicated.
A quiet word to thank the chef after our meal and Puttock explains The Kitchen Cat’s mantra – find the best quality produce and do as little as possible to it; the result, simple and delicious authentic Italian food. And we think he got it pretty spot on.
